Acromyrmex ants are a genus of leafcutter ants that belong to the subfamily Myrcininae within the family Formicidae. These fascinating ants are primarily known for their unique behavior of cutting and collecting leaves to cultivate fungal gardens, which serve as their primary food source. The ants feed the cut leaves to the fungus, which breaks down the plant material, making it digestible for the ants. Acromyrmex ants have a robust build, with a distinctive appearance that includes large mandibles adapted for cutting leaves.
