Ants of Zihuatanejo
FAMILY FORMICIDAE
Panther Ants
Genus Neoponera
This large ant, one of the largest in North America, is an active hunter that roams through trees and the upper canopy for prey - mainly other small insects. They are often seen hunting solo. They can inflict a very painful sting to humans. It is covered in fine hairs, hence the name. Workers are known to harvest extrafloral nectar and carry it back to the colony for larvae and colony members. They are opportunistic cavity nesters, nesting in dead wood, knots, dead cavities in live branches.
