Birds of Zihuatanejo

CLASS AVES

Squirrel Cuckoo

Piaya cayana

The Squirrel Cuckoo lives in forests and woodlands, in canopy and edges. Squirrel Cuckoo feeds mainly on large insects which it takes off the foliage. Its feeding behaviour makes it very similar to Red Squirrel. Squirrel Cuckoo hops along branches, through foliage, in bounding leaps. The adult has mainly chestnut upperparts and head, becoming paler on the throat. The lower breast is grey and the belly is blackish. The central tail feathers are rufous, but the outer are black with white tips.
