Campylopterus hemileucurus
The Campylopterus hemileucurus, or Violet Sabrewing, is a striking hummingbird native to the tropical forests of Central America. It has a wide range, stretching from Mexico to Panama, and is often found near rivers and streams. Its diet consists mainly of nectar, although it also feeds on insects. This species has a unique behavior of hovering or "hawking" while foraging for food. In terms of appearance, it has a metallic violet-green back and an iridescent head and wings. Its long tail feathers can reach up to three inches in length.
