Brown Pelican
Pelecanus occidentalis
The Brown Pelican is a large bird found along the coasts of the Americas. It has a wide range, throughout the US, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and the northern coast of South America. It is found along sandy beaches, mudflats, marshes, and mangrove swamps. Its diet consists of fish, crustaceans, and other marine life. Brown Pelicans build their nests in salt marshes and mangrove swamps. They exhibit many interesting behaviours, such as synchronized dives for food or cooperative hunting. This large bird has a wingspan of 6-7 feet and a distinctive brown and white plumage.
