SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA
Guatemalan Cracker
Hamadryas guatemalena
The Guatemalan Cracker (Hamadryas guatemalena) is a striking butterfly in the Nymphalidae family, renowned for its intricate wing patterns and ability to produce a "cracking" sound. The upper side of the wings is intricately mottled with black, gray, white, and sometimes subtle blue tones, resembling tree bark or lichen. Like other Hamadryas species, this butterfly perches head-down on tree trunks, blending seamlessly into the bark.
