SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA
West-Mexican Swallowtail
Battus eracon
The West-Mexican Swallowtail (Battus eracon), a member of the Papilionidae family, is a striking butterfly endemic to parts of Mexico. This species, like others in the Battus genus, exhibits bold coloration and a strong ecological association with toxic host plants. Caterpillars feed exclusively on plants in the Aristolochiaceae family, such as Aristolochia species. These plants contain toxic compounds that render the butterfly unpalatable to predators.
