Great Pondhawk

Erythemis vesiculosa

The Great Pondhawk (Erythemis vesiculosa) is a robust and visually striking dragonfly in the family Libellulidae, widely recognized for its size and coloration. As its name suggests, it is often found near ponds and other freshwater habitats, where it is an active predator. Males: Bright green thorax and abdomen, often with black markings or banding along the abdomen. Wings are clear with black venation, sometimes showing faint yellowish or amber tints at the base. Large, emerald-green eyes dominate the head. Females: Similar in size but more subdued in coloration, with a brownish or olive-green body. Carnivorous, preying on a wide range of flying insects, including mosquitoes, flies, and moths.
