Bright rose-pink to reddish-purple abdomen, giving the species its common name. Found near freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, marshes, slow-moving streams, and ditches. Carnivorous and primarily feed on small flying insects such as mosquitoes, flies, and gnats.
