Panamic Cushion Star

Pentaceraster cumingi

The Panamic Cushion Star (Pentaceraster cumingi) is a species of sea star found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, primarily along the coasts of Mexico, Central America, Ecuador, and the Galápagos Islands. It inhabits rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and seagrass beds at depths ranging from 0 to 50 meters (0 to 164 feet). The upper surface is covered in bumpy, raised tubercles, which provide a rough texture and some protection from predators. Feeds on sponges, detritus, algae, and small invertebrates. Like other sea stars, it has a unique feeding method, everting its stomach over food and digesting it externally before pulling it back in.
