The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is an invasive freshwater fish species that has been introduced to Mexico for aquaculture, fisheries, and food security. However, its introduction has had significant ecological and economic effects. First introduced in the mid-20th century for commercial aquaculture and fisheries enhancement. Now found in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and coastal lagoons across the country, Competes with native fish species such as characins, cichlids, and catfish.
