Ray-finned Fishes of Zihuatanejo

CLASS ACTINOPTERYGII

Longnose Pufferfish

Sphoeroides lobatus

One of the most notable features of pufferfish is their ability to inflate their bodies when threatened, making them larger and less appealing to predators. Additionally, some pufferfish, including Sphoeroides lobatus, contain toxins (such as tetrodotoxin) that can be harmful if ingested. These fish are generally solitary and tend to be relatively slow-moving. They exhibit different behaviors based on their environment, including foraging and interacting with potential mates.
