PHYLUM MOLLUSCA
Hexaplex princeps
Hexaplex princeps
The Hexaplex princeps, commonly known as the Crowned Murex or Royal Murex, is a strikingly ornate marine gastropod belonging to the family Muricidae. The shell is thick, elongated, and adorned with prominent, spiny ridges and varices, giving it a crown-like appearance. Its coloration varies from creamy white to light brown, often with darker bands or spots. Found in rocky and sandy substrates in the eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly from Mexico to Peru. Predatory, feeding on bivalves and other mollusks, using its radula and acidic secretions to bore through shells.
