Worm Snails

Family Vermetidae

The Worm Snails (family Vermetidae) are a unique group of sessile marine gastropods known for their unusual tube-like shells and ecological roles in marine ecosystems. Unlike most gastropods, they do not have coiled shells, and their lifestyle is more akin to that of sedentary tube-dwelling organisms. Their shells are irregular, tubular, and often cemented to hard substrates like rocks, coral, or shells. Worm snails are suspension feeders. They use a specialized mucus net to capture plankton and organic particles from the water.
