Moths of Zihuatanejo
ORDER LEPIDOPTERA
Cisthene polyzona
Cisthene polyzona
The Cisthene polyzona is a species of lichen moth belonging to the family Erebidae and subfamily Arctiinae. This group of moths is known for their small size, vibrant coloration, and association with lichens or similar substrates in their habitats. The forewings are strikingly patterned with bands or zones of orange, black, and gray. These contrasting colors often serve as a warning to predators. The bold coloration is thought to mimic distasteful or toxic species, a strategy called aposematism.
