Fig Sphinx

Pachylia ficus

The Fig Sphinx Moth (Pachylia ficus) is a large, nocturnal moth known for its strong flight, bright coloration, and strong association with fig trees. It is an important pollinator of fig species, transferring pollen as it feeds on nectar. Its larvae feed on fig leaves, and although they can cause damage in large numbers, they are not typically harmful to the trees. Wingspan: Typically between 90–110 mm (about 3.5 to 4.3 inches). As a member of the Sphingidae family, Pachylia ficus has powerful, swift flight. It is capable of hovering in front of flowers while feeding on nectar, much like a hummingbird.
