ORDER HYMENOPTERA
Square-headed Wasps
Tribe Larrini
The Larrini tribe is a group of wasps within the subfamily Larrinae, part of the family Crabronidae. These wasps are commonly known as square-headed wasps, a name that refers to the characteristic shape of their heads, which are wide and square-like compared to other wasps. Wasps in the Larrini tribe are solitary predators. They hunt other insects, such as caterpillars, beetles, grasshoppers, or even other insects, and paralyze them with a sting. The prey is then taken back to a nest or burrow, where it serves as a live food source for the wasp’s larvae.
